NewsNo news posted Sorensen Magnet School of the Arts and Humanities is committed to providing an academically excellent education for every child, with an emphasis on integrating the visual and performing arts, along with humanities, into our standards-based curriculum.
Sorensen is a magnet school, which allows us to "attract" students from all over our wonderful community. We strongly value community at Sorensen, and that is reflected in our weekly Friday Gatherings, weekly Classroom Meetings, daily times of goal setting and reflections, and our uniform policy which encourages inward, instead of external, development and creativity. We value and encourage the feelings of success that students experience when they have instruction, practice, and amazing final products in the visual or performing arts mediums. Stop in to complete an Enrollment Application, meet the staff, and get your questions answered. We look forward to partnering with you! |

Tubbs Hill Integration ProjectIn May 2011, the 2nd and 3rd grade classes at Sorensen Magnet School took a day-long field trip to Tubbs Hill. They rotated between four stations, learning about native plants, native animals, conservation, and nature drawing. The next day, local artist Jessica L. Bryant (who also taught the drawing segment) came into the school and began an artist in residence project. Twelve 2nd and 3rd grade students learned about value and color while painting three different views from Tubbs Hill in watercolor. The finished paintings were used to generate a compilation poster. The paintings are arranged by class; the top row is Ms. Bagan's 2nd grade students, next is Mr. DuCoeur's 2nd grade, then Mrs. Erwin's 3rd grade, and the bottom row is Mrs. DuCoeur's 3rd grade. The kids showed remarkable focus and dedication to their artwork, and the results are spectacular! As part of her residency, Jessica also taught painting to the kindergarten and 1st grade classes in a more relaxed environment.
Posters are for sale through Sorensen for just $15 each. Stop by the office and get yours today!
